I went to public school and my mom was a stay at home mom until my bro went to Jr. High (I was in high school).
Today, I have two BSc degrees and work in oil and gas, and my bro is an engineer who's just about to graduate.
I just don't get parents who insist their kid gets special schooling. If your kid is a tool, no amount of expensive private schooling is going to help them achieve greatness. Just like bright kids aren't going to let public school hold them back in the end.
As for the economics of staying home or not- many families cannot afford it, but in other families where they could stretch things, neither parent stays home because they want to work... it's neither right nor wrong either way, it's just a different choice.
