I may be off base as I have only flown AC the past little while, but in actuality I think the reclining only affects space in your torso and head area. As in the distance from about your waist up decreases with the recline.

It would be a silly design if your tray table moved around every time the person ahead reclined unless they are an ####### and recline it like it is an ejection seat.

I guess it comes into play if you are long legged and you knee level is higher than you waist in a seated position.

I agree about reclining though. I hate it. I have what you would call a large personal space bubble and don't like some ass invading it.

A couple weeks ago I lasted a ten hour flight without reclining, just because I know how much I hate it.

Am I a hero? no. Stupid? Possibly.
