Exactly what should be done. No one will say "no" unless they are the biggest ####### in the world, and in that case, recline anyways because it's your call in the end, not his.

I personally find it so nice when someone gives the courtesy ask, because they know that someone is behind them, and I'm not left spending the rest of my flight in a silent rage at them, I then don't really care that the seat is a bit closer to me.

It's the people who know the 2 people next to them and they all recline and then continue to talk to each other and play cards and such, all with the reclined seat. If you are not sleeping, keep the seat up!
