Probably relates to how much they have to charge to make a profit. I seem to recall a major breakthrough in technology long ago (60's?) when a company came out with a blade that lasted 10 or more times longer than anything else on the market...the "Wilkinson Sword" seems to come to mind as the company. After that, all the other companies, e.g. Gillette and others, had to follow suit with the same quality of of blades in order to compete.
