It is not just the players either it is the families. Even with that kind of money who's wife would want to be in Winnipeg when they could be in Calgary or even LA, Denver or Dallas for 10% per year less? What is the point of having the money if there are such limited local amenities to spend it on? Say what you will about Miami, Nashville, Phoenix or Tampa, they definitely have some very swanky areas. Sure some of the Canadian players might like it but likely not the Euros or Americans. Even the younger players would rather enjoy the night life of the bigger cities over Winnipeg. Even the prospective owner everyone touts, Thomson, doesn't live there, what does that say?

You make Winnipeg seem like hell on earth. True, the winter is cold, and takes some time getting used to. However, it's a great place to raise a family, and there are a lot of benefits to living here that not many cities have.

Plus think of the local endorsement deals, how much is a player going to get paid there as opposed to a much larger media market?

You really think players in Calgary would get significantly more than in Winnipeg? I do not recall that being an issue 15 years ago.
