i really hate it when people are hard on a young ref - some of those kids are 14 yrs old and there are a lot of rules of hockey that most people do not understand - and when they (ref) miss a call, it is the same as your child missing an open net, or feeding the puck up the middle or not providing any back pressure as the play moves up the ice.

When I was a ref, probably 15 at the time, I called back a goal in minor hockey week semi finals in overtime because at that time there were no goalies in net for overtime so the player had to be over the blue line to score, and he wasn't anywhere near the blueline yet. Well that team lost like 10 seconds later after a faceoff at center ice, and the coach just blew up on me. Followed me to the refs room, I ended up screaming at him and he threatened to have me "never ref again"
The coach for the other team then grabbed him and pulled him away. I ended up calling someone up in the organizing committee for minor hockey week (forget what position, they gave the refs the number before the tourney) and he ended up suspending that coach for the rest of the tourney. But I was seriously shaking in the dressing room after that, I thought the coach was going to hit me.
This was a Novice 1 game.
