i just finished my second season as an assistant coach for my son's novice team in the blackfoot hokey association - and while i have yet to see anything really dumb you occasionally hear stuff coming out of the stands that just makes you shake your head.

i really hate it when people are hard on a young ref - some of those kids are 14 yrs old and there are a lot of rules of hockey that most people do not understand - and when they (ref) miss a call, it is the same as your child missing an open net, or feeding the puck up the middle or not providing any back pressure as the play moves up the ice.

my head coach this year also liked to do what i call "coaching from the bench" - which i really hate - i figure the kids have enough inputs on the ice - we can sort out the coaching when they are back on the bench and i have my board to draw the picture.

the other thing i kind of dislike is that some kids are quick to dump all over the goalie - i am likely more sensitive to this because my son is an aspiring goalie. one kid on our team got a shut-out because the other team could not hit the net and he thought he was suddenly the second coming of geo vezina and that he could criticize the other goalies for letting in goals.

i also wish that i could evaluate my son fairly against his peers - he was playing goal a few weeks ago, and he missed a couple that i thought he should have had, he wound up getting player of the game as voted on by the opposing coaching staff and i thought that he could have played better - goes to show what do i know.

as an aside, when i watch my son play, and he is "getting it" and having fun, i feel nothing but joy in my heart and nothing else really give me a similar feeling - anyways, i have really gone off on a tangent......
