My brother is out as gay in Junior High School and he is not bullied at all and has lots of friends. In fact, he told me the other day he's never been more popular.
I will add integration caused a lot of discomfort as well. That really doesn't matter at all. Being uncomfortable with it is not OK. It's understandable but something you must work beyond.
