About a sarcophagus...That was always the likely end game no matter what and will likely be the end game even in the best case scenario right now. What they have is high level waste and whether you put that in a bunch 55 gallon drum sarcophagi to bury under ground or bury it on site in one large one it is still a sarcophagus.

The design of the GE Mark 1 reactors may not be as robust as some have led on. Regardless, now that we are talking complete entombment of possibly up to six reactors plus ground-soil clean-up and possibly the creation of a permanent no-go zone, the costs of this disaster are going to be absolutely massive. Added on top of the other tsunami related destruction, it's looking to be a very hard, long road ahead for Japan.
