At a macro level convergent evolution makes sense for some things; eyes, wings, etc have all evolved independently even on our own planet, and the laws of physics apply everywhere. A creature on a far flung planet is going to evolve to see using similar principles for similar spectra (assuming a similar star anyway).

But at a molecular level, all life on earth shares the same molecular machinery because we all descended from the same predecessor. But very early on the way that machinery developed could have happened very differently, or differently enough that it'd be so obviously different than our own.
