That's fair. Sometimes, but not always, I wish there was a way to wipe the slate once a new tennis season gets under way. I thought Djokovic might make some ground on that number one spot with Nadal out with injury, but looking at the rankings, you would never really know:

With that said, I certainly wouldn't want to take anything away from Nadal, who was ridiculous last year for the reasons that you mentioned above.
It's a catch 22 for me. However, if Djokovic does beat them this season, he will reap the benefits down the road. I'd say the number two spot is reachable.
