Things are nowhere near as bad as being let on by the media (especially the western media) who are angling for an every worse plight. From the speculation of looting on Friday (none), the China Syndrome (none) and CNN again today freaking out about a non-existant tsunami, people are coming through this tragedy in amazing fashion.
The reason for the ####ty reporting by news outlets in Japan is simple - very few, if any, have any competent people who understand the dynamics of the country (let alone the language) anymore. Most are flighted in from China, Hong Kong or other regional stops and they simply plain out miss things. Big things. That, and since they don't feel connected, turn themselves into speculators at the first drop of the hat (CNN is the worst at this by the way - the only thing they get right the first time is yesterday's news).
The rub, however, is that a lot of the folks posting here from Japan may not be temporary. If they're like me, it's hard to leave a place when it's home (and not to mention your home is there). Where would you go? The only thing to do is try and help out where you can.
Mind you, I say this from a hotel room in Shanghai but I'll be back on Thursday - not planning on staying away too long.
