I do a fair amount of highway driving and if the posted limit is 110, I set my cruise at 118-119.
I generally use this "just under 10 over rule" in all of my dailIy driving (exception: School/Playground Zones) and have yet to be ticketed when in this parameter. I stay in the right lane for the bulk of the trip and lane change frequently as I overtake those that either
choose strict adherence to the posted limit or those who are travelling slower, whether by choice, or circumstance.
When I'm
in the left lane, I am
anal about keeping my eye on my rearview.
If some "amateur Andretti" (as one poster put it) is closing fast and I'm passing slower traffic, I will accellerate to 125-130 and get out of his way, then drop back onto my set cruise speed.
There has been the very rare occasion where I have missed someone closing on me and been flashed. It gets your attention and I will
either accelerate or pull over, depending on the situation. I do not feel "put out" in a case such as this and I
really can't understand why so many people take such great offense in such a situation.
As others have pointed out, this is accepted practice in much of the rest of the world, although my "foreign" experience is limited to the Interstate system in the Western US.
It's just common courtesy...but courtesy just ain't that "common" in some parts of the world...or so it would seem. Just like the "flash" function on high beams, automakers put
a rearview capability into every vehicle on the road...for a reason.
If people would use it...I wouldn't flash
anyone.
Does
this make me a bad/dangerous driver???
