But I don't know, you probably got a point. I try and follow everyone who follows me, but I only use it on my iPhone so I usually just tweet or read what people I follow have tweeted. I rarely search for things. Thanks though.

If you aren't contributing then nobody will find you. There's nothing wrong with that ... lots of people just lurk.
I've found the two things KTrain brought up are key. Tweet what's interesting to you. You're free to tweet things like "Off to breakfast with my wife" or "argh!", but in truth those are a little better suited for Facebook where people might actually know your wife or have an invested interest in what might be bothering you. Tweeting what interests you just ensures you develop a network of like-minded people.
If you just send out noise people will just stop following you. Everybody is different, but for the people who are following 200+ people, multiple tweets with little substance just come off like spam.
There's no real right way and wrong way to use it. That's just what I've found to be true if growing followers is your goal.
