It wasn't that he killed his kid and the others, it was that when he got out of the truck, the military appeared thru the mist. Right when it happened, everyone I saw the movie with was like, "Oh sh!!!!!". Great ending and a great non Hollywood ending. If we were led to believe that everything just continued, I would have felt a little ripped off. A little.
I think ff you didn't read the book, you wouldn't have your mind set on the book ending as the way it should have ended.
