I do not really have much faith in the general populace's taste in music, mostly because not too many of them spend time looking for good music; however, that being said, two things happened in the last couple weeks that somewhat renewed my faith in the "mainstream's" tastes. First, the Black Eyed Peas performed at the Super Bowl and everyone routinely recognized how bad they were. This is good. More people need to understand that they are terrible. Secondly, the Arcade Fire's "Suburbs" won for album of the year at the Grammys. More people need to understand that they are (if nothing else) important, so this is also good.
As for my take on Metric, I think they are solid. However, I prefer the super group to which Emily Haines and James Shaw also belong.
