Lots of guys would have been on Championship wages, and when you go down, the revenue really drops off. Happened when Brighton went up to the Championship a number of years ago. Two seasons there - full Championship wages - then relegation made finances an issue. The differences in wages can be significant between the leagues, plus revenues drop off and the size of the back room staff is usually a lot bigger as well. It is really unfortunate that demotion can cause so many problems, but these clubs all have to spend to try and compete and stay up and when they don't it is usually a problem.
