In Alberta, the Fatal Accidents Act limits which family members could bring a claim and what they may claim. What you can claim is really quite limited and basically a given provided you fit within the definition of one of the parties entitled to a claim. You get a fixed amount for bereavement and other amounts to cover expenses related to the funeral, counseling, etc.

I imagine the situation in Manitoba is quite similar.
