Commuters who want to reserve a parking spot at Calgary's LRT lots will soon get that chance.

The current $3-a-day fee will be done away with on April 1.

However, the city will move to a system where commuters can pay $70 a month to reserve a spot in the park-and-ride lots.

Up to half of the spots in each lot will be designated as reserved, starting in April.

City administration is also going to study the feasibility of offering free or reduced-price spaces for carpoolers.

City council voted 10-5 to kill the park-and-ride fee in December. The fee has been used to improve security and conditions in the parking lots since being introduced in 2009, but many see it as a nuisance.
