I'm not a smoker myself, but I've watched (and supported) both my father and my brother in quitting.
With dad, it was hard. He'd smoked for most of his life. I asked him when he felt he had "officially" quit, and he replied "When I could do the things I used to do while smoking, without it. Going out with my friends was the hardest part of that. All of them smoked. They understood, but the temptation was very hard. But I managed, somehow."
With my brother, he quit because he became a father. He promised the mother that he would not smoke in or around the house, and it's kind of grown from there. After being asked, he says that he's not "officially" quit. That he still gets cravings, and still wants to have a smoke, and may start up again when his son is 'of age'.
