Yeah, the one thing I haven't tried is just bypassing my router and hooking up directly to the modem. Fortunately the modem is right next to one of my Xbox's, so I'll give that a try. I have a pretty old router, but it does the job with every other device I have hooked up through it (wired/wireless), much like your friend.

Every now and then I will get an entire episode/movie in excellent quality, but most of the time it either switches back and forth or stays on the lowest bar the whole way through.
