I was going to suggest the same kind of thing. When I was 15, I spent a few weeks as a framer's labourer. I actually loved it. Learned a ton, made money, got some muscle, got a tan. (oh come on, we're all vain at that age)
As long as it doesn't seem like you're sending the kid to boot camp, there's a good chance he'll enjoy doing some work.
