Your example is obviously dated, because it's quite easy to watch the vast majority of your local teams games for free today, even in non-traditional hockey markets. How does giving away EVERY SINGLE GAME for free increase interest. Is the argument that there's a 15 year old kid in Raleigh that would be totally into hockey if he could watch the Stars-Wild game instead of a Canes game?

I'm not sure about you but I rather have the convenience of online streaming than having to sit in front of a TV to watch a game. Easier to multi task on the computer.
As for the kid in Carolina, you would have to subscribe to Versus to get all the games right? What do you think he's more likely to do if he wanted to watch the game? Convince his parents to subscribe to the channel or go click an illegal stream so he can watch it at his convenience while chatting with his friends on Facebook.
