I'm thinking the NFL, NBA, MLB & NHL have enough money they can research these things. It's not like one day they just decided not to give a free option. It obviously doesn't work business wise because if it increased profits and veiwership like you claim it would be a no brainer and I'm sure someone from one of those leagues would have brought it forward by now.
From the small sample size I've used a site like ADTHE it would show you the number of people viewing the game and it never once got over a 1,000 people. So even if you bring over ten times as many people you are no where near the traffic to get enough from advertisers to put a banner and break even.
Not to mentioned the added cost, time and resources you have to put into this free option. Taking away from development from the product the people that actually pay see.
