Yes, 3G will survive a jailbreak. If you don't install anything other then the unlock it won't run slower. It's not a custom firmware- it's Apple's just opened up for root access.
If you were running a 3GS or a 4 i'd say get the official unlock, but since the iPhone 3G has reached the end of its update cycle the unlock is for life, as is the jailbreak.
No implications with Rogers/Apple, other then warranty, which is expired anyway. Jailbreakers can rever to official firmware at any time.
It is impossible to "brick" a phone by jailbreaking.
Also, what firmware is your iPhone 3G currently on?
