I think a big reason for this is that you now need to purchase an online code to play a second hand copy of NHL11 online (and other newer EA games I believe.)
I love NHL11 and play it a lot. I've been a loyal EA hockey supporter since '93-'94 but I don't like the direction they're taking at all.
The menu system is a joke and it has been for years now.
Paying for game features once you already own the game is just wrong. I realize this is a trend that stretches well beyond EA.
On a positive note, I've been purposely matching up against friends in HUT. Surprisingly easy. It has breathed new life into this mode for me!
