Pros:
-Non-turbo Subaru's are usually pretty reliable and Subaru's simple AWD system is less complicated than the competition for example the 2008+ WRX's don't even have the rear LSD anymore.
-Solid lineup of compact to medium size cars/CUV's with AWD standard
-Subie owners seem to be a pretty loyal group and get pretty attached to their cars. Not sure why but they do.

Cons:
-Unless you are a HP freak I would caution to stay away from turbo models. Hundreds of 2009 WRX engines have had to be replaced due to rod knock and 2008+ STI's suffer from an alarming number of ringland failures. The WRX 5 speed isn't that great either.
-Terrible paint. Terrible. Japanese manufacturers are all using substandard water based paint which is inferior to that used by domestic and german cars but Subaru's seems like the worst as chips turn into rust very fast and there will be plenty of rock chips driving in Calgary. 3M is a must.
-Lots of interior rattles and the odd driveline clunk. As Subie owners say; "It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru"
-Maybe the biggest problem with buying a Subaru in Calgary is that the two dealers are by far some of the worst in the city. Not as bad as the local BMW dealerships but not good at all.

Bottom line is that they are pretty good cars for our climate and non-turbo models are fairly reliable. If you are used to driving Honda's or VW's you will find Subaru interiors low rent but you are getting AWD for a decent price. If you are looking for all out performance personally I would look at the Mitsubishi Evolution X which is faster, handles much better, has a superior AWD system, and a stouter engine over an STI.
