A few months ago one of my rec hockey teammates had a massive heart attack (we didn't know this at the time) on the ice... just collapsed on the ice with 10 seconds left in the game. I started the to do CPR but to be honest, had no clue what I was doing. Luckily two guys from the other team had taken a course and took over until the paramedics got there (which ended up being 12 minutes). He went into a coma for 3 days but pulled through. The doctors said if it wasn't for us doing CPR and doing it right away, my teammate/friend would be dead or severely brain damaged.
We also used the defibrillator (amazing invention by the way) on him, ended up zapping him 3 times... one of the craziest things I have ever seen in person.
It's terrifying to say the least, to see your friend stop breathing and turn purple but it's amazing how some people can just step up in those moments.
On a side note, my friend is 27 years old and was totally healthy. It ended up that he had a 100% clogged artery which caused the heart attack.
