More likely it's a drive waking up than a fan if it happens when you're waking up from sleep.

Is it an immediate blast of noise or does it build up for a second or so?

Is there a DVD in the drive when you're waking up from sleep?

If you want to see if it's a fan, download Prime95 and do a stress test on your CPU, it should heat up and kick the fan on.
