It's not common sense at all. How bright something "appears" is called "apparent magnitude", as opposed to how bright something really is - "absolute magnitude".
It's an ignorant article, and your OP - especially the thread title - is equally ignorant. For once in my CP life, I'm going to have to agree with peter12.
