The long story was that the small job wasn't done quite right by my neighbour, but it all turned into a big mess in the basement (not in a main room, more a storage room... thank heavens) which we got a professional to come and fix.
The small crack I posted about was just a small part of a bigger problem. It all got fixed, but we moved within a year of having the issue taken care of.
