CSI was well over 26+ million viewers. Desperate Housewives was in the 23+ million viewer range if I remember correctly. Without a Trace, Everybody Loves Raymond, Grey's Anatomy... all huge. Hello internet, hello video games, hello DVR's and before you know it those days are history.
At the time, Lost was the most expensive pilot episode ever shot... to think we'll ever see this again (from NBC... lol) is a gross misunderstanding of TV ratings and their current state, and the fact that they are a direct reflection of a show's fate and the direction networks go as far as pickups.
On cable? Yeah... Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire... very expensive, serial shows. Broadcast is a whole different game.
