Vader's Tie Advanced X1 had a shield generator and a limited hyperdrive unlike the regular tie's and Tie Interceptors which had no shields no armor no life support and no hyperdrive. In otherwords they were pretty much sopwith camels fighting F-15's.
By the time of Star Wars according to EU and even Lucas, there weren't a lot of clones left, most of the remaining ones were storm troopers and not pilots. Add to the fact that these pilots were not trained and were seen as fairly disposable based on the craft that they fly, its a miracle that they managed to launch without bouncing off of the walls.
Of course at least that pilot died fairly quickly, unlike the poor ####### in Empire Strikes back who bounced off of an asteroid.
