The failure of the Meech Lake Accord, killed the PC's in Quebec. NAFTA destroyed them in Ontario (I can remember the t-shirts tradesmen had made, that had an eagle with a red, white and blue arm band, raping a beaver, with NAFTA in bold, blood red letters above it). The recession of the late 80's hit the east coast hard, especially central New Brunswick. The PC's were accused of attempting to cover up the Somalia scandal.

While Kim Campbell was incompetent, it was Mulroney before her that caused the PCs to lose that election. She was just the scapegoat. No one was going to vote PC after Mulroney.
