Absolutely preach defensive awareness to T.J., but it should be secondary. There's room in the modern day NHL for roamers, and T.J. seems to be capable of developing into one.

Absolutely not.
I would much rather have him developed to be a good defender in all areas of the game. He is a defenceman first, so if he wants to be an NHLer he needs to respect that as his #1 priority. A lot like a Lidstrom, Giordano mould where you trust the offense to come instead of force it.
I would hate a Mike Green on this team, a no offense, liability on the back end who causes as many goals as he scores. And what happens when his offense dries up, like it has this year? Then you just have a crappy defense man.
