I know they can punch in the barcode number as well, I had some tickets I'd printed myself just as the ink cartridge died and they we're having trouble scanning the faded ink on the barcode. So they took the slip of paper and punched the number in manually.
Never tried it with just the PDF on my phone though, worth a try, just ask em to trying punching in the code.
