If you're loyal to your company, you like your job and enjoy it, you're more likely to show up on time and not have a problem with working unpaid OT.

If you hate your job and your only motivation is money, you're gonna stretch the rules as much as possible. Why come in on time to a job I hate when I can come in 5 minutes late? Why do anything at work when it doesn't matter how hard I work? I don't make any more money. I don't care about the company, so what's in it for me?

I see these as the two mentalities. Someone doing crappy work who know they don't have a place to advance to and no schooling probably don't care a ton. Why should they?

People who like what their doing and have a place to move up or advance their career have more incentive to show up on time.

When I move on to another company and I ask my current boss for a reference, I want him to be able to say to my new potential employer that I was never late. Seems like that is definitely not a given.

Seriously, this book is a must for any managers out there:
