Thats not entirely true. Walsh was an assistant coach at Stanford and Berkley before going to the AFL with the Oakland Raiders as an assistant coach. In 1968 he was hired by Paul Brown of the expansion Cincinnati Bengals as an assistant. After eight seasons he went to the SD Chargers for a season before accepting the HC job at Stanford. He spent two season with Stanford before taking the HC job of the 49ers.
So yes he was a college head coach before he became an NFL head coach. However, he spent a lot of time as an assistant in professional football (Under one of the greatest coaches of all time no less) before he became a college head coach.
