From my experience connecting my BB to different Wifi networks it depends on your router. I know with my BB, at home i used to have WEP security and although my BB would connect, it wouldn't get an ip, then i switched it to WPA and it works great.,

That pin code that you mentioned, it depends on your router, the newer router requires for you to input that pin for it to connect properly. On old routers you can just type in your password and you connect and your done.

I have a new router at work (dlink) and it asked me for the pin, so once you connect, you can go to a computer and login to your router. I believe for dlink its 192.168.0.1 (i think) and then you login with you username password, and on the first page i think theres a area for you to put that pin in, and once in it connects right away. If not you might have to click the wireless tab and it should be on that page.

Oh and i don't think there is a way for you to change it so that you don't have to put in that passcode, its set in the routers software, or well atleast i never found a way and just went and put in the pin.
