The Town and Heat are definitely similar, but I feel that Heat was much better overall (especially the ending).
Spoiler!
Vincent and Neil in Heat (pacino and deniro) very much mirror Hamm and Affleck, right down the scene in the precinct where Hamm and Affleck have their face to face meeting. Where the stories diverge of course, mainly for them, is that they dont like each other and Affleck gets away with it. I can't say I care for the fact that Afflecks character got away; he had a perfect reason (the bank manager chick) to come back and get caught. Instead he walks away, pretty much sinking all development for his character.
In Heat Neil comes back to kill Waingrow because the movie builds and grows Neils character so that he has no other choice--it would make no sense and be against his characters norm to ignore it. Afflecks charecter is moving towards becoming a legit citizen and he has fallen deeply in love with this woman, yet, he makes no risk to try and get together with her. I much preferred Heats ending (frankly one of the top endings in movie history) to The Town. The Town started great, kept its action going, but really started to lose steam as the story couldn't keep up with the action. This is where The Town failed, and, in my opinion Heat succeeded.
