For a good screen Dell would be worth checking out - they usually have options to upgrade the monitor. My last Dell was a 15" with a glossy 1680x1050 resolution when that resolution was pretty rare - at the time it was outstanding. Now they've got LED backlit screens so you should be able to find the display you're looking for on a 15" there.
I've only had on 17" but I found the bulk to really make it a pain in the ass. Having a 13" MacBook Pro on a plane after lugging around my 17" for a year was like a revelation. 17" are more like a desktop replacement, not many are good for regular travel.
