Do we have any reason to believe that this young kid did anything more than make a stupid mistake? Do we have any reason to believe his actions were based on hate and discrimination? The hoopla is the mixed reaction to the coach's decision to forfeit, not the child who made the remark.
It probably was just something stupid, though I doubt it is an isolated incident. The hoopla is likely appropriate as it forces many people to reflect on what racism is and how they ought to react towards it.
