Only 4 or 5? Yikes! I must've really hit jackpot then. I just won an MP3 player and fully charged I can get up to 50 hours.

Pretty much all products recommend that you fully charge the battery for the first time before you begin using it. Also, while you don't have to (depending on the battery) it is recommended you let the battery completely die (when the prodcut tells you to recharge it) and fully charge the battery again. This is just to get the maximum usage out of the battery.
