I am not suggesting they should be made to give up all aspects of their culture when they immigrate here but they should be required to integrate in to our society. Instead we seem to have this view that we must be so tolerant of others that we shouldn't expect them adapt at all when they arrive. This is why you have second generation Canadians that still speak neither English or French.
As far as Canadian Culture is concerned we are supposed to be a country with equal rights. Yet we allow women to be oppressed right on our own soil, the fact that honor killings even happen, being forced into marriage or cover themselves from head to toe and board an airplane without proving who they are. Allowing Sikh's to bypass the law so they don't have to wear a helmet on a motorbike or allow their children to bring a knife to school.
Unless we stand up for our principles we are going to lose them.
Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I am not saying every immigrant falls into this category. However we should be making an effort to ensure all immigrants know what is expected of them.

How you can type your first paragraph and then follow it with the bolded sentence is truly puzzling. Part of equality is allowing people the right to practice their own religious and cultural beliefs without interference, so long as those beliefs don't impinge upon the rights of others.
The rest of that second paragraph is equally ridiculous.
