Lol, it wasn't stolen using a computer virus. For the Iraq docs, he logged in to the CIDNE system, chose "Export to Excel," then burnt it onto a CD titled "Lady GaGa Music."
For the embassy cables, he logged into a different system, but did basically the same thing. He exported them then burnt them to a CD (or flash drive, can't remember which).
No hacking mumbo-jumbo, no secret Matrix moves. The US just believed it was secure to allow privates to have access to this material that is easily exportable and can be copied to CDs and/or flash drives.
Basically, the US was being a massive idiot.
