I think everyone is missing the point here.

Why was this allowed to happen? It's highly likely the US Government had the capacity to make this whole thing disappear long before any cables were released let alone known to exist in 3rd party hands. The fact that Wiki-leaks is an established organization with a history for doing this suggests that intelligence agencies should have a really good idea of what they are up to.

The response from the American government is what people focus most of their attention on. But don't get me wrong, they are a fascinating read for anybody who loves history. Primary sources this fresh are pretty darn rare. Most confirm assumptions, but I found a few rather insightful. I encourage everyone to have a look.
