I guess I would say that any charity who is short of their goals goes on to say "please give more to help us meet our goals." I've seen the Poppy Fund saying it was coming up short, United Way, countless telethons, etc. Personally I prefer this method of campaign as opposed to getting phone calls during supper, or people knocking on my door. Christmas time and as I spend gobs of money on my family I hear the jingling of bells and I am reminded to share some of my fortune.
I would also like to know who's way you think they are in?
Last point; if a Jewish Synagogue was having a food drive; would you blame them for rejecting canned hams?
