3 ways.
1-Unlock/Buy a position boost pack in the hockey shop for the specific position.
2-Unlock/Buy equipment slots and boosts in the hockey shop(think materia from final fantasy 7 or something)
3-Earn cards by reaching player milestones that involves getting to a certain number of games played/player grade which will unlock exp points. For example the last card requires 150 games played(in eashl or otp) and an average grade of A- overall in the last 20 games.
2&3 You can combine together but initially 1 will have the higher stats
