I took my Engineering degree at the U of A, and an English class was a degree requirement. (This wasn't that long ago.) The only reason I got out of it was because I got a 7 (top mark possible) in higher level English IB. I think a 6 worked as well, but I don't recall.

Anyway, I would estimate that ~98% of my fellow engineering graduates took that English course. I didn't know anyone else who was able to get out of it, and it likely would have come up, because people bitched about taking that course all the time.

My experience was that people complained about their one English course, and took identically that amount, since you couldn't take less and wouldn't get any credit for taking more.
