Movember is a good example. I don't think I ever talked as much about prostate cancer in a month. Many times did "getting ourselves checked" come up in regular conversation amongst a group of guys. I think raising awareness is a good thing in itself.
Having people talk about child abuse is a pretty important part of the cause. That said, I am not on facebook, so I will not be participating.

That's the whole problem. Talk is cheap and it makes people think they've done something when they really haven't.
